BANGALORE, Sept 30 — Over 3,500 doctors in Karnataka Tuesday resigned en masse in protest against the government’s refusal to accept their demand for salary hike, the Press Trust of India reported.
Rejecting the government’s appeal not to resign till talks are held on Oct 4 to resolve the issue, the doctors submitted their resignation letters to the health and family welfare department Director, Usha Vasunkar.
The Karnataka Medical Officers’ Association general body meeting took the decision, though Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa had conveyed through Chief Secretary Sudhakar Rao that a meeting would be convened on Oct 4 to consider their demands, Association president Dr H N Ravindra told PTI.
“Enough time has already been given to the government to look into our pleas,” he said.
However, Ravindra said doctors would work till October 14, the deadline set by them to meet their demands.
Government doctors at the “beginners level” get a monthly pay of Rs 18,500 (RM1,340) which the Association has demanded be raised to at least Rs 35,000.
The government has offered a pay hike ranging between Rs3,000 and Rs 8,000 which the Association has rejected. — Bernama
