WASHINGTON, Oct 1 — A magnitude 6.8 earthquake hit Indonesia’s Sumatra island this morning, the US Geological Survey reported, the second large quake to rattle the area in 24 hours.
The quake struck at 9:31am on land, 155km northwest of Bengkulu.
It was quite shallow at a depth of 25km.
A 7.6 magnitude quake hit Padang yesterday afternoon, knocking over hundreds of buildings, and Indonesia’s health minister estimates thousands may have died in the earlier earthquake.
The quake was felt around the region. High-rise buildings in Singapore, 440km to the northeast, evacuated staff. Office buildings also shook in Kuala Lumpur. — Reuters
