Lebanon jails 10 al-Qaeda members for life

BEIRUT, Oct 24 – Lebanese military tribunal on Saturday handed down 10 life sentences to members of an al-Qaeda network, after they were found guilty of involvement in terrorist activities.

The military tribunal on Friday handed down verdicts against a total of 18 men in the case, 10 received life with hard labour, seven received hard labour for a range of terms, while the 18th member of the group was found to have complete his sentence during the trial process.

The group, made up of 13 Palestinians, two Syrians and three Lebanese, were found guilty of inciting murder, vandalism, making and possessing explosives, hiding outlaws, helping al-Qaeda members escape, smuggling fighters into Iraq and also smuggling fighters from Syria to Lebanon and vice versa.

Military sources said that the Lebanese army has uncovered since early 2009 six fundamentalist groups belonging to al-Qaeda. – Bernama
