Maxis signs strategic partnerships to deliver IPTV service
KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 – Maxis Bhd today signed new strategic partnerships with 14 content providers, to deliver the Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) service in Malaysia.
The content partnerships will enable Maxis, an integrated communications service provider to deliver on-demand movies and series, including high definition and 3D content as well as seven free-to-air channels, to its customers anytime and anywhere.
Among the partners are Radio Television Malaysia (RTM), Media Prima Bhd, Brilliant Pictures, Vision Plus Entertainment Sdn Bhd, Travel Channel International Limited and All Asia Multimedia Networks FZ-LLC.
“Today’s signing is a key milestone for Maxis, as it signifies the commitment to enrich the lives of our customers.
“We look forward to playing an active role in supporting the government’s initiative to advance the Malaysian creative content industry,” Maxis chairman Raja Tan Sri Arshad Raja Tun Uda said at the signing ceremony here today.
The event was officiated by Information, Communication and Culture Deputy Minister, Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum, on behalf of the Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim.
In his keynote address delivered by Salang, Rais said the partnership is a healthy development for the entertainment and media industry.
“The industry has developed to a strong position, where demand for local content is now bringing significant revenue to many local animation and film producers, with ‘exportable quality’ content worldwide.
“In Malaysia, the industry is estimated to be worth RM16 billion based on advertising, animation, digital content, television, games, music and video,” he added.
Last year, the sector generated RM9.4 billion in revenue with more than 45,000 creative industry professionals and contributed 1.27 per cent to the gross domestic product.
To be available in July, the IPTV would be accessible to Maxis Home Fibre Internet and 1.2 million highspeed broadband subscribers.
The monthly subscription fee is expected to be less than RM200. – Bernama
