Amy Search joins Umno
KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 — Three singers, including Amy Search, have joined Umno due to their conviction that Malay unity can only be enhanced if the party stays in power.
“Only Umno is able to bring the people back together,” Amy (real name: Suhaimi Abd Rahman) told reporters after submitting his membership form along with singers, Mus May or Mustafa Din and Ibnor Riza Ibrahim at the Umno headquarters here today.
Rock singer Amy (picture), 54, said Umno could guarantee the future of the people and the country through the untiring efforts of its leaders.
Responding to a question, he said it was not necessary to join PAS to uphold Islam.
“Umno also upholds Islam but not in an extreme way. Umno also does not sideline ulama (religious scholars) in the administration,” he added.
Another rock singer, Mus, 44, said he decided to join Umno as it had proven its capability in providing the best for the country.
“Umno has mellowed and has ruled the country well for so long. The government has done a lot to improve the people’s well-being and prosperity,” he said.
Pop singer Ibnor Riza, 51, said he had been planning to join Umno for a long time as he was aware of the party’s ability to provide good future to the people.
The trio, who handed their membership application forms to Umno executive secretary Datuk Ab Rauf Yusoh, will become members of the Umno Dataran Merdeka branch in the Bukit Bintang division.
To date the Umno Dataran Merdeka branch has 43 members, including actor Tan Sri Jins Shamsudin and singer Jamal Abdillah.
Ab Rauf said Umno always welcomes members of the arts fraternity to join the party as they could become its ambassadors. — Bernama
