Jeweller charged with kidnapping schoolboy
SHAH ALAM, July 25 — A gemstone seller was charged in the Magistrate’s Court today with abducting and wrongfully confining a nine-year-old son of a “Datuk” for a RM850,000 ransom seven years ago.
K. Sangelee Thevan, 38, of Kulim, Kedah, was charged with two others still at large with committing the offence in Section 13 here at about 1.30 pm on March 4, 2005.
A fourth person, contract labourer V. Ayakannu, 39, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the High Court here in 2007 after he had pleaded guilty to the offence.
Sangelee Thevan was charged under Section 3 of the Kidnapping Act 1961, which provides for the death sentence or imprisonment of up to 20 years and whipping upon conviction.
Sangelee Thevan, who was arrested on July 12, nodded to indicate that he understood the charge read out to him by the court interpreter.
However, no plea was recorded.
Magistrate Nurul Syahida Zainal set August 30 for mention.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Noor Husnita Mohd Radzi appeared for the prosecution.
