August 05, 2012

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 5 — The police shot dead three machete-wielding Indonesian robbers, who attempted to attack them, in a botched break-in at a house in Jesselton housing park, Pulau Tikus, today.

Penang Police chief Datuk Abd Rahim Hanafi said the public had alerted police about the robbers’ attempt to break into a house and when a police team arrived, the robbers acted aggressively and attempted to resist arrest in the 3.30am incident.

“The police had to fire several shots at them when they continued to attack the policemen even after a warning shot was given. They died at the scene,” he told reporters here.

The robbery gang, known as ‘lima gang’, had been involved in 18 break-ins, since January in the Tanjung Tokong, Jelutong and Pulau Tikus areas with losses amounting RM500,000.

Abd Rahim said police are on the lookout for the remaining gang members and urged the public who have information on the gang to contact the nearest police station. — Bernama
