Critics and other attendees of the first screening took to Twitter to express their opinions, a selection of which can be found below in the first of a series of articles from Relaxnews examining social media reaction to the Cannes Film Festival.

The film, which tells the story of two young children who fall in love and run away to the wilderness before a violent storm turns their peaceful community upside down, has sparked two trending topics in France, home of the festival — ‘Wes Anderson’ and ‘Moonrise Kingdom’. Before the film was screened expectations were high, with even high street retailer Topshop @Topshop creating buzz with one of the day’s top tweets — “Wes Anderson’s new film Moonrise Kingdom looks ridiculously cute”.

Following the screening, reaction on Twitter was overwhelmingly positive, with critics praising the cast, cinematography and humour:

Kate Muir, Chief Film critic of the Times UK @muirkate tweeted “MOONRISE KINGDOM is drowned in Rockwellian nostalgia, filmed through yellow cellophane, and very, very funny”.

Peter Debruge from movietrailertrash.com (@AskDebruge) tweeted, “While no less twee than Anderson’s earlier films, this reminiscent-of-RUSHMORE teen pic supplies a poignant metaphor for adolescence itself.”

Critic Eric D. Snider (@EricDSnider) tweeted “First #Cannes film: Wes Anderson’s MOONRISE KINGDOM. It is delightful and very Wes Anderson-y. Great kids in the cast.”

Movie magazine Little White Lies (@LWLies)  tweeted “Huzzah!” Lots of time for Moonrise Kingdom: smart, chic and very charming. WA’s best in years.”

Canadian TV anchor Tanya Kim (@Tanya_Kim)  continued with the overwhelmingly  positive reaction on Twitter stating ““Moonrise Kingdom”... Wes Anderson cranks out another sweet piece. A must-see.”. — AFP-Relaxnews
