The Kedah-born 25-year-old was featured by the prominent paper yesterday in its music section under the “New band of the day”.
Although the review critiqued her music as “smooth and bland, lacking any of the idiosyncratic qualities of the better new female singers”, it commended Yuna for being “refreshing”.
“She (Yuna) doesn’t have a unique voice — used in its broadest sense to include lyrics, sensibility or worldview,” The Guardian’s Paul Lester wrote in his review.
But he noted the buzz surrounding her, citing online indie music site hypetrak.com: “If you’ve been searching for some refreshing new music, look no further.”
Yuna, whose full name is Yunalis Zarai, started singing at the age of 14 and rocketed to prominence on Myspace.
She landed a record deal with New York-based label Fader Label in February last year.
Williams produced some of her music including the single “Live Your Life”.
Besides music, she owns a fashion company called “I Am Jet Fuel”.
