Kedah NGOs call for legal action against Bersih organisers, participants
The Bersih rally on April 28 turned chaotic after police fired tear gas and water cannons at the crowd. — file picALOR SETAR, May 8 — Five non-governmental organisations (NGO) in Kedah have lodged police reports, asking that legal action to be taken against both the participants and organisers of the Bersih 3.0 rally on April 28, Bernama Online reported this evening.
The NGOs are the Kota Setar Islamic Missionary and Welfare Organisation of Malaysia (Pekida), Badan Generasi Prihatin (BGP), Kedah Small Business Association, Madrasah Salihiah Rescue Task Force (BBSMS) and Jalan Lumpur Residents Association, Alor Setar.
Kota Setar Pekida chairman, Mursyid Ariffin, told the news portal the peaceful gathering that turned violent had caused property damage, policemen to be injured and disturbance to the local community.
The purpose of the rally was to challenge police integrity, the court order, law and Federal Constitutions, he added.
Bernama quoted him as saying, “Bersih is seen as an attempt to rebel against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and a trial to overthrow the government in an uncivilised way.”
