7 dead, 20 injured in Genting bus accident

A front view of the crashed bus. — Bernama picA front view of the crashed bus. — Bernama picKUALA LUMPUR, Oct 30 — Seven people were killed while 20 others were injured after a tourist bus skidded and overturned at KM38 Genting Sempah at 7.50pm tonight.

Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (Operations) Azizan Ismail said the bus with 44 passengers, all members of Kampung Siong 4B Youth, Baling, Kedah was descending Genting Highlands when the mishap occurred.

The victims were between 13-28 years-old. Six of them died at the scene while the other, a religious teacher and entourage leader Mohd Zaidi Mohd Sufian, 28, died on the way to Selayang Hospital.

Azizan said the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department was alerted about the accident by Bentong Fire station at 7.51pm.

Seven fire engines from Bentong, Kuala Lumpur, Selayang and Taman Melawati were rushed to the scene to extricate the victims who were trapped inside the bus.

The victims were taken to Bentong Hospital, Selayang Hospital and Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

Mohamad Fais Nasharuddin, 18, and Ahmad Iswas Abd Halim, 15, are reported to be in critical condition at Selayang Hospital,  while Mohd Shamsuri, 15; Mohd Ajril Azizi Azhari,15; Mohd Akram, 19 and Mohammad Hafifi Yahya, 19, are currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit.

Mohd Safuan Md Mokhtar, 20; Hafizudin Onan, 16; Muhamad Syakur Sulaiman, 19; Mohamad Nazren, 16 and Faiz Syazwan Azlan, 18, received out-patient treatment at the same hospital.

Meanwhile, eight others were sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital, five of whom sustained severe injuries.

Mohd Zairul Hafizat, 15, who escaped with minor injuries told Bernama that the accident occurred during a drizzle.

He said he just woke up from sleep when the bus skidded due to brake failure.

Mohd Zairul said the 43 youths aged 14-25 from several villages in Baling, Kedah, was on an educational trip.

He said the bus left Kedah at 11pm yesterday and arrived in Genting Highlands at 8am today.

At 7pm, the entourage left Genting Highlands for Kampung Melayu Subang to participate in a homestay programme.

They were scheduled to return to Kedah at 5pm tomorrow.

Mohd Zairul said he had yet to know about the status of his brother who was also a member of the entourage.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Amirul Shukri, 13, who sustained minor injuries, said he was awakened when the bus skidded and overturned.

He said he managed to crawl out to safety through the bus' broken window. At 7pm, the group left Genting Highlands for Kampung Melayu Subang to participate in a homestay programme.

They were scheduled to return to Kedah at 5pm tomorrow.

Meanwhile, at Bentong Hospital in Pahang, 15 victims who sustained minor injuries were given outpatient treatment.

Relating the incident, Mohd Zahid Azmi, 15, said he was awakened by the voices of his friends shouting "Allahu Akbar" and saw them running to the back of the bus.

"Those seated at the front of the bus ran to the back when the bus  skidded,"  said the teenager who just set his foot in Genting Highlands for the first time the day earlier.

Mohd Saiful Mohamad Nor, on the other hand, said the accident occurred in a blink of an eye.

The 16-year-old teenager who sustained back injuries and several bruises on the arm, admitted that the accident had really frightened him.

Tan You Seng, special aide to Health Minister and Bentong Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai visited the victims at hospital.     

He said that all 15 victims would be transferred to Selayang Hospital early tomorrow. — Bernama
