7 foreigners arrested for RM2mil jewellery theft

SHAH ALAM, July 21 — Police arrested seven foreigners for the theft of RM2mil in diamond jewellery stolen from a Hong Kong national at the KL International Airport (KLIA).
The Star reported today that in an incident on July 18, two foreigners were seen in KLIA CCTV footage stealing a suitcase from the victim while the latter was preoccupied at a counter. One of the suspects was Costa Rican, the other, Mexican.
In less than a minute, one suspect managed to take the suitcase while the other suspect distracted the 53-year old victim.
Selangor police chief Deputy Commisioner Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah was quoted saying the victim was a jewellery company manager, in the country for an exhibition in Kuala Lumpur.
The police, after checking airport CCTV recordings and intelligence reports, traced the suspects to a condominium on Jalan Semantan.
In the ensuing raid, two Colombian men, two Costa Rican Men, one Ugandan woman as well as the two earlier suspects were detained. The two Colombians were father and son, with the latter studying at a college in Kajang while the Ugandan was enrolled at a college in Puchong. The other five suspects were in the country on social visit passes.
Police said the suitcase and its contents had been recovered, and the victim will be flying into verify the contents. Hisan said the same group was believed to be involved in theft of hospital equipment, with investigations still ongoing.
