7,000 at anti-LGBT rally

April 21, 2012

KUALA LUMPUR, April 21 — About 7,000 people took part in a rally against the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual (LGBT) community at the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Sports Centre Stadium in Serdang near here today.

Seven Malay non-governmental organisations led by the Malaysian Malay Network Organisation (JMM) took part in the three-hour-long rally

In his speech, JMM president Azwan Din Hamzah said LGBT members, if allowed to persist, would lead to the destruction of the country and religion.

“We want to stop it. We cannot compromise on matters involving faith and religious values,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama.

Yesterday, Kuala Lumpur City Hall rejected JMM’s application to use Dataran Merdeka for the gathering because the activity was not in line with City Hall’s policy on the use of the square.
