KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 19 — Student activist Adam Adli Abd Halim, who has been suspended 18 months or three terms from the Sultan Idris University of Education (UPSI), has said he will challenge the university’s decision in court.

The 22-year-old told The Malaysian Insider it was because UPSI’s administration had not given him a fair hearing during a domestic inquiry on January 9.

He was suspended from his studies on a charge of bringing disrepute to the university.

“I will take this matter to court; right now I’m still in talks with my lawyer... we are going through the details before taking it to court,” he said.

He did not name a specific date, saying only that the case will be filed soon.

Adam Adli made headlines on December 17 last year for his stunt in lowering a banner bearing the likeness of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak outside ruling party Umno’s headquarters here, an act that earned him both admiration and criticism.

The education major had been slapped with breaching UPSI’s disciplinary code over his involvement with a street assembly lobbying for academic freedom.

The Penang-born appeared unfazed by his suspension.

He said: “I will go on a roadshow to campaign (for academic freedom) until the Universities and University Colleges Act is abolished.”
