GEORGE TOWN, Aug 25 — Penang's top cop Datuk Wira Ayub Yaakob used a Ramadan event today to ask both the Penang government and Umno to put their differences aside to resolve the Friday sermon issue.

Ayub said the first half of Ramadan was a test for everyone, and all parties should use the second half of the fasting month to make peace, hinting at the escalating spat over Penang Umno's claims that the King's name was dropped from Friday sermons in favour of Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

“Let’s put away the misunderstandings and tensions, and manage the issue in the second half of the month,” he told reporters, after receiving the state government’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri contribution.

Both the state police and armed forces received RM10,000 from the state government, respectively, with Lim presenting the cheques to Ayub and Chief of Staff from the Battalion II Division Colonel Badrul Hisham Mohammad.

Also present at the cheque presentation ceremony today were Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Mansor Othman and Deputy Chief Minister II Professor P. Ramasamy.

Today, Lim said “bullying tactics employed by certain quarters to obtain what they failed to get” was very regrettable.

“No policies can be drafted and no government can exist if threats were to continue,” the chief minister said

He added that law and order needed to be respected to draft government policies that could generate wealth to be distributed effectively.

“There is no effective way to do it, but each and every one of us must agree that we need an open mind to accept new ideas and changes,” he said.
