KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 1 – The placing of a severed pig’s head at a Rawang mosque yesterday was insensitive and a coward’s act aimed at fanning racial tensions ahead of elections, the DAP’s Lim Guan Eng said today.

The opposition party’s secretary-general denounced the act and urged the government to immediately investigate the matter and put an end to the provocation.

“We urge Malaysians to remain calm and not to overreact as this incident was clearly the doing of certain quarters with despicable intentions,” he said in a statement today.

“We will not let decades of peace be undone by the cowardly actions of extremists and bigots,” he stressed, and added that he believed Malaysians have learnt to celebrate their cultural and religious differences and would not fall for such “evil” incitement.

Pigs are haram (forbidden) to Muslims and the act of placing the animal’s severed head at the entrance of the Nurul Iman Mosque in Rawang, Selangor echoes the desecration of several places of worship nationwide following a controversial High Court ruling in favour of the Catholic Church over the use of the word “Allah” two years ago.
