Diabetes Association: Almost 1 in every 2 Malaysians obese
KLANG, May 29 — The prevalence of obesity in developing countries like Malaysia is still on the upward trend, said Datin Paduka Dr Santha Kumari, chairman of the Selangor branch of the Malaysian Diabetes Association.
She said the matter should be viewed seriously as it could lead to various complications, including type 2 diabetes cases.

Almost one in two Malaysians are either overweight or obese, placing them at a high risk for diabetes,” Dr Santha Kumari told a press conference, here, today.
She said a recent study showed that 22 per cent of Malaysians above the age of 30 were diabetic patients.
It is vital for diabetic patients to seek counselling on the disease in order to adopt a healthy lifestyle and prevent serious complications, she said.
Dr Santha Kumari said that, for instance, the Malaysian Diabetes Association’s Selangor branch had opened a community diabetes centre in Taman Chi Liung, Klang, and were assisting diabetic patients in the management of the disease.
The centre also organises talks, aerobic sessions and medical camps for diabetic patients living in Selangor.
“At present, we also have a project with the assistance of the CIMB Community Link (prevention of obesity in overweight children),” she added.
On another matter, Dr Santha Kumari said the association would be organising a gala charity dinner with a performance by “The Three Degrees” from the United States, the enduring female vocal group which has been around for almost four decades, at the Premiere Hotel here on June 16.
She said songs like “When Will I See You Again” will no doubt bring back fond memories for fans of the group.
The event will be held in aid of the Malaysian Diabetes Association’s Selangor branch for a building fund. — Bernama
