Drivers can renew licence on birthday from Nov 21

PUTRAJAYA, Nov 15 — Drivers can now renew their licence based on their date of birth, Bernama Online reported the transport minister as announcing today.

Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha told the news portal that the initiative makes it easier for people to remember when their driving licence expires.

He added that he hoped it would also reduce the number of inactive licence holders in the country, which current Road Transport Department records show to be 2.2 million out of 11.8 million drivers.

The government will absorb a portion of the renewal fee depending on the length of the gap between the licence’s expiry date and the licence holder’s birthday, he said.

Kong also told the news portal that documentation for the Automated Enforcement System (AES) will be ready by the end of the year.

The AES is a system of cameras that is installed at high-risk accident zones and traffic lights to capture traffic offences.

The minister said over 800 accident hot spots have been identified so far and that the system will be installed in stages next year.
