KUALA LUMPUR, March 23 – MCA and Gerakan have lined up mostly new faces in the list of candidates for the 13th General Election (13GE), to reflect changes in their approach towards voters.
Gerakan President Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said the Gerakan list comprised mostly women and young candidates, deemed winnable candidates.
“The list is almost finalised... over 90 per cent of seats and candidates have almost been decided... those we have nominated are winnable candidates but changes can be made to the list,” he told reporters at his office, here, today.
Koh hoped the results of the 13GE would be more positive for Gerakan and Barisan Nasional (BN) compared with the GE12 in 2008 which saw Penang fall in the hands of the opposition after 39 years under the Gerakan-BN control.
He added that confidence was high compared with 2008 since the support of the Malay, Chinese and Indian communities has returned to BN.
In MARAN, MCA Deputy President Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said 30 per cent of the candidates in the list submitted to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, were new faces.
Liow said the MCA would also abide by any decision made by Najib who is also the Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, with regard to the distribution of seats for the 13GE.
“We have picked candidates who can be accepted by the voters and those who are capable of carrying out their responsibilities and duties well. However, that doesn’t mean the older candidates are not capable, just that we are giving the younger generation an opportunity to shoulder the future of the party,” he said after a ground breaking ceremony for a health clinic in Kampung Seri Jaya, near Maran, here today. – Bernama
