Government to monitor MAS once restructuring proposal received

May 27, 2012

IPOH, May 27 — Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanazlah said his ministry will monitor closely Malaysia Airlines (MAS) after it receives the paper on the national airline’s proposed restructuring.

He said the proposal paper would contain steps to stem the airline’s losses and improve its financial position following recent discussions between the Finance Ministry and top MAS officials.

“We want their projections for the next five years. We want to study them closely and, secondly, we want to know their plans for the future.

“So we’ve already discussed with them… they will be submitting (to us) the details on MAS and we will monitor them,” he said after opening the Bandar Spring ‘Kedai Rakyat’ in Kampung Tengku Hussien near here.

He said the government wants the national carrier to prepare its future plans in order to remain competitive.

Ahmad Husni also said the measure was necessary to save MAS which had decided not to proceed with its earlier plan to collaborate with budget airline, AirAsia.

The second finance minister also said the ministry has established a special unit to monitor developments within the national airline. — Bernama
