PETALING JAYA, Feb 15 — A woman was charged at the Magistrate’s Court here today with murdering her 10-year-old granddaughter last month, Bernama Online reported this evening.
Tan Kooi Eng is alleged to have murdered Pow Mei Shuang at their home at No 08-09, Kondominium Koi Legend, Jalan 4, Kinrara, Puchong at 11pm on January 30.
She was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code which carries the mandatory death sentence if convicted.
The 56-year-old nodded that she understood the charge after it was read out to her in Cantonese by a court interpreter.
However, no plea was recorded.
Deputy public prosecutor Fatimah Zahrah Ramli applied to the court to have the accused sent to Hospital Bahagia Ulu in Kinta, Perak for further psychiatric evaluation in addition to a recent examination by the Psychiatric Department of the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
Magistrate Mohd Nazri Omran allowed the application and set March 26 for re-mention pending submission of the post-mortem report.
Tan, who is said to be suffering acute depression brought on by the stress of financial problems, allegedly smothered the child to death with a pillow.
She then tried to commit suicide by cutting off a finger from her left hand.
