Guan Eng says pig’s head incident ‘gravely disrespectful’

February 04, 2012

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 4 – DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng has condemned the pig’s head incident in Sentul as a “gravely disrespectful act” which has no place in multiracial Malaysia.

“Mosques, temples and churches are meant to be places for worship and sanctuary and not to be defiled recklessly,” Lim (picture) said in a statement today.

He said the incident, the second of its kind in the past week, appeared to be the work of irresponsible parties who wished to stoke racial, religious and political tension ahead of the general election and urged all Malaysians to reject such “despicable acts”.

Lim, who is also Penang chief minister, added that the police should probe the matter with the greatest urgency and hoped that the culprits will be brought to justice soon.

A pig’s head was found outside a mosque in Sentul on Thursday, the second such incident this past week after a similar discovery outside a Rawang mosque on Tuesday.

Batu MP Chua Tian Chang said the pig’s head, which was wrapped in a black plastic bag, was discovered outside the gates of Masjid Al-Hidayah at around 7.30am by mosque officials.

The PKR vice president said he was told that mosque officials first noticed the bag at around 11.00pm last night but the pig’s head was only discovered this morning when the bag was opened.

Police have taken away the pig’s head and are said to be investigating the matter.

Chua said he believed the act to be a “politically motivated provocation” calculated to create tension among Muslims and non-Muslims and urged all parties to remain calm.

Earlier this week, a pig’s head was at the doorsteps of Masjid Nurul Iman at Batu 18, Rawang, said to be the first such incident in the area.

The pig’s head was discovered at 5.30am by a mosque official, who immediately contacted the police.
