Guan Eng urges all to desist from racial, religious hatred

September 09, 2010
GEORGE TOWN, Sept 9 — Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has urged all Malaysians “to rid themselves of racial and religious hatred” in his Hari Raya Aidilfitri message.

“For me, religion brings forward humanity and it does not ignite hatred. Love between neighbours, friends and politicians with differing perceptions is important because we are all of one status as human beings,” he said in a statement today.

“Political differences can be discussed or debated, and should not be hated, insulted or discriminated against by those with power,” the DAP secretary-general added.

Lim said racist remarks must be stopped immediately because such remarks do not bridge relationships between the different communities in the country.

“I am saddened by certain elements that were willing to lie and slander during the holy month of Ramadan where I was once again victimised,” he said.

Lim was also hopeful that the Federal government is serious in handling racial issues in the country.

He said battling extreme racial and religious practices warranted actions of not only a particular political party, but is a national issue that deserved everyone’s attention.

“There shouldn’t be favouritism. To be fair, all those who are guilty, whether they are Malays, Chinese, Indians, Kadazandusuns, Ibans or from other races must be penalised,” he said.

Lim said his administration will continue to uplift the Malay community in Penang to enable Malays to be dynamic and professional.

He said the state has increased its allocation for Islamic affairs to RM24.3 million this year from RM12.5 million in 2008.
