Guitar hero Ponnudorai dies aged 51

KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 — Local music icon Paul Ponnudorai passed away this morning after suffering total organ failure caused by an infection, The Star reported on its website today.

The 51-year-old guitarist had begun his career in the 1980s as a club performer, before scaling the heights to perform with such luminaries of the music scene as Sudirman and Sheila Majid.

His mastery of the guitar had allowed Ponnudorai to excel in a diverse range of genres, from pop to rock and the softer melodies of jazz and even bluegrass.

Such was his talent that TIME magazine once wrote that he may have been “quite possibly the greatest musical interpreter of our time”.

The guitarist is survived by his wife, 91-year-old mother Kamalam, four brothers, three sisters, nieces, and nephews.

A wake will be held at the Gui Yin Funeral Parlour at Jln 222, Petaling Jaya at 2pm today, with the funeral to be held on Monday.
