‘Gun-for-hire’ Rela man held

July 03, 2012

KUANTAN, July 3 — A People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) member was arrested by police in Taman Gambang Damai here last night on suspicion that he was hiring out a firearm for RM500 at a time.

Pahang CID chief SAC T. Narenasagaran said when the arrest was made at 10.45pm, the suspect had with him a revolver and six bullets.

“The suspect, who was waiting for someone by the roadside, tried to flee when police approached but did not get far,” he told reporters here today.

He said in follow-up operations, police seized 10 more bullets, a shotgun with 30 bullets and a laptop at the suspect’s home.

“He is believed to have bought the pistol from an acquaintance from Thailand for RM500,” he said, adding that the suspect had been hiring out the gun since the last two months and that it was believed it had been used in a number of robberies.

However, the suspect, who had no previous record, had a licence issued by Rela for the shotgun, Narenasagaran said. — Bernama
