Hanif: Bersih panel hopes to meet Bar Council on Sept 3
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — The Bersih 3.0 Independent Advisory Panel has sent a letter to Bar Council president Lim Chee Wee to meet on September 3 to discuss the rally on April 28.
Chairman Tun Hanif Omar said if the date or venue were unsuitable, he was willing to change them for the convenience of the Bar Council to make it happen.
He said that the panel was also willing to discuss further with the Bar Council about the role and purpose of establishing the panel.
"I am going to take up the Bar Council willingness to meet up with me and have a chat. I may discuss a bit more and stress the government's hope in creating this panel," he told reporters after presenting Aidilfitri contributions to charitable organisations at Wisma Genting, here today.
Previously, Lim and Bersih chairman, Datuk S. Ambiga decided not to attend a briefing with the panel saying it has no legal authority to investigate what happened at the rally, unlike the Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) that had held a public hearing.
Lim said that they were ready to meet to discuss with the former inspector general of police their reasons for rejecting the invitation.
Hanif hopes to meet with Lim and Ambiga although they insisted that they would not testify before the panel. — Bernama
