Hindraf leader Waythamoorthy returns to Malaysia
JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 1 — Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) leader P. Waythamoorthy returned here today for the first time since leaving the country in November 2007.
He entered the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex here at 12.06pm with a passport issued to him on Monday by the Malaysian High Commission in Singapore.
Speaking to reporters at the Austin Hills Golf Resort here, Waythamoorthy (picture) claimed that he and his supporters were stopped by immigration officers and had his passport taken away. However, his passport was returned after an interview at the front desk and he was allowed free passage into the country. He said he would return home to Seremban tonight.
Waythamoorthy left the country soon after the Hindraf rally in November 2007 to take the movement’s campaign global. His passport was revoked on April 2008.
Replying to a question, Waythamoorthy said he would not be taking sides in the country’s political arena nor would Hindraf become a political party.
He stressed that Hindraf’s main duty was to champion the cause of the Indian community in the country. — Bernama
