RAUB, Aug 31 – Officials from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency (MACC) who conducted a raid at the Tersang forest reserve area against illegal logging today also made another discovery.
They also found signs of illegal gold mining activities being conducted in the area.
The discovery was made when the officers found a mini-dredger about 15km from the site where illegal logging occurred.
The raid, involving 10 enforcement officers from Putrajaya who entered the forest area about 8am, was conducted following complaints from local residents.
The illegal logging activities were believed to have been carried out since four years ago.
A source from MACC said a 53-year-old man and his two sons who were at the scene when the raid was carried out were questioned and later released.
He said that from information received, three groups were responsible for conducting illegal logging in the area.
It was believed that members of these group had felled about 300 timber trees over the past few weeks, he added.
At the scene, the officers found two tonnes of felled timber trees which had been cut into small sizes and about five to six tonnes of timber trees scattered in the area. – Bernama
