According to Bernama Online, the 84-year-old Kedah Sultan, accompanied by his consort Sultanah Haminah Hamidun, was first given a grand send-off from a crowd of over 30,000 people in Alor Star before his departure from Istana Anak Bukit to Istana Negara.

The royal couple later reached Parliament Square here for a royal welcoming ceremony where they were greeted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, as well as Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and wife Puan Sri Norainee Abdul Rahman upon arrival.

After the 21-gun salute and inspection of the guard-of-honour, comprising 103 personnel of the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment, the royal couple then granted an audience to Cabinet ministers and senior government officials before proceeding to Istana Negara for the swearing-in ceremony.

Sultan Abdul Halim was elected the 14th Yang di-Pertuan Agong for a five-year period by the Conference of Rulers on October 14. His appointment comes into effect today.

He first held the post on September 21, 1970.

Sultan of Kelantan Sultan Muhammad V was elected the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
