PUTRAJAYA, Feb 25 — Putrajaya may inadvertently become Malaysia’s first “world-class city” courtesy of Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Ministry programmes aimed at making Kuala Lumpur achieve that status, deputy minister Datuk M. Saravanan said in a Bernama Online report today.

“In our desire to make Kuala Lumpur a world class city, I believe that Putrajaya will become the country's first city of international standard,” Saravanan was quoted as saying in the report.

“This is because Putrajaya does not face problem with hawkers and transportation as everything is in order, including houses of worship.”

The Putrajaya planned city was mooted by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and developed with the express purpose of being the country’s administrative capital.

In 2001, it was designated a Federal Territory, joining the ranks of KL and Labuan.

It was built using funds from state oil firm Petronas, which owns and leases Putrajaya to the government.
