Man jailed, fined for bribing cop
JOHOR BARU, June 5 — A man was sentenced to two years’ jail and fined RM15,000 or three months’ jail by the Sessions Court here today for bribing a policeman.
Judge Mohd Nasir Nordin handed down the sentence on Sim Kim Fat, 42, after he pleaded guilty to the charge.
Sim, who does not have a permanent job, was charged with offering RM2,300 to traffic policeman Rahim Lamburakan from Bukit Aman as an inducement not to take action against him for an alleged drug offence.
The offence was committed in a car while they were heading towards the Yong Peng police station from Jalan Pagoh-Ayer Hitam at Km118 of the North-South Expressway about 10.55am on July 19 last year.
The charge, under section 17(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act, carries a maximum imprisonment of 20 years as well as five times the amount of the bribe involved or RM10,000 whichever is lower, if found guilty.
In mitigation, Sim said he had just lost a child and promised not to repeat the mistake.
MACC prosecuting officer Mohd Sajori Martubi said Sim was now in Kluang Prison for a house-trespassing offence. — Bernama
