Man’s leg almost severed in gang attack

May 22, 2012

GEORGE TOWN, May 22 – A couple’s romantic stroll on the beach ended in horror when the man was attacked by five youths, one armed with a machete, near Queensbay Mall last night.

In the 10pm incident, S. Arivarasan’s right leg was almost severed as the assailants who arrived in motorcycles, pounced on the 25-year-old victim.

Arivarasan was warded at the Penang Hospital’s intensive care unit where his condition was described as stable.

The police have not ruled out revenge as the motive of the attack.

A witness, identified only as Faizal, said the motorcyclists parked their machines in front of his food stall before attacking the victim.

“It happened so fast that no one could do anything to help the victim... furthermore, there were not many people there at the time,” he said.

South West district police deputy chief DSP Lai Fah Hin urged those with information on the attack to contact the South West police headquarters at 04-8662222 or the nearest police station to facilitate investigations. – Bernama
