MCA will keep Gopeng spot, says Zambry
Zambry said BN will retake Gopeng in the coming election. — File picIPOH, Sept 17 — The Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the Gopeng parliamentary seat in the next general election will again come from the MCA, Perak BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said today.
Zambry, who is Perak mentri besar, said Gopeng, a Chinese-majority seat, had been traditionally contested by the MCA and will remain so.
In the general election in 2008, MCA’s Ling Hee Leong lost to Dr Lee Boon Chye of the PKR by a majority of 7,368 votes.
“MCA will represent the BN there, and I am convinced the MCA will field a credible candidate and we can recapture the seat in the next general election,” he told reporters after opening the Gopeng Umno Division delegates meeting, here.
Zambry said surveys and various programmes involving the people as well as the spirit of integration among the BN component parties indicated that the BN will wrest the seat from the opposition.
He said he had been following the developments in the Gopeng Umno division and was satisfied with the unity among the party members as well as their association with members of the other component parties.
Earlier in his speech, Zambry said the BN should also defend the Sungai Rapat state seat.
“We must support whoever is selected as the candidate. Those who are not selected should not engage in feuds among ourselves for the battle is with the opposition,” he said.
The state assemblyman for Sungai Rapat is Datuk Hamidah Osman, who beat Radzi Zainon of PAS by a majority of 636 votes in the last general election. — Bernama
