The BN and Umno Youth chief said MCMC’s actions were “unnecessary” and added that it was still unclear as to why the clip was removed.
“MCMC’s confused reaction towards the Undilah video is quite damaging to us.
“What is the big issue here? It has been blown out of proportion,” he told reporters after attending MCA Youth’s annual general assembly here.
Khairy was responding to a statement made by Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim regarding the video.
Rais said the “Undilah” video was unsuitable for broadcast as it contains “subliminal messages” aimed at influencing viewers.
According to Bernama, the Umno minister said the clip, a 4.38-minute public service announcement urging Malaysians to vote, may offend to certain groups. He did not however name the groups.
The MCMC reports directly to Rais’ ministry.
MCA Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong, who was featured in the “Undilah” video”, said the matter was discussed during the wing’s recent central committee meeting, and that they disagreed with what MCMC had done.
“It is uncalled for, it does not warrant censorship...it is very subjective, they (MCMC) shouldn’t be hyper-sensitive.
“Do not use the mindset of the 1950’s to charge the young generation,” said Wee.
It is understood the Home Ministry will make the final decision on whether to allow the clip to be aired on television.
The MCMC had explained last the weekend that the video, produced by musician Pete Teo, was temporarily taken off the air as it had yet to receive approval from the LPF (Film Censorship Board.)
It however described the order as “normal practice” and said the decision had nothing to do with the clip’s contents.
The video features personalities like Umno Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, Wee, Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Abd Rashid Shirlin and opposition figures Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua, Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar, Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad and Seri Setia assemblyman Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
