MCMC to check safety, technical aspects of telco devices
CYBERJAYA, April 18 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will soon conduct fresh market surveillance of communications equipment and devices in Malaysia to ensure they comply with local safety standards and technical regulations.
The regulator has appointed Sirim to carry out the surveillance.
“The purpose of this exercise is two-pronged.
“First, we want to make sure that the equipment and devices available in the market meet with safety and other technical standards, so this move is aimed at protecting consumers. Secondly, globalisation and trade liberalisation have made it easier for products to enter the market, so we have to make sure that we put in place effective market surveillance and this should be done periodically,” MCMC chairman Datuk Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi said in a statement today.
He said the market surveillance programme will ensure that all communications equipment available in the market comply with existing standards as well as technical regulations which will make them safe to use, adding that regular reports will help to ensure further compliance.
“The establishment of market surveillance will enhance consumer and business confidence in the regulations and the quality of conformity assessment systems,” Sharil said.
Sirim QAS International chairman Dr. Zainal Abidin Mohd Yusof said the market surveillance programme would utilise e-ComM application software as developed by Dagang Net Technologies Sdn Bhd (Dagang Net).
