Ministry probes Suaram link to Soros

NILAI, Sept 9 — The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry is investigating whether an American non-governmental organisation allegedly funding Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) is linked to currency speculator George Soros, Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said today.

He said the NGO was one of two based in the United States allegedly contributing a huge amount of funds to Suaram.

The ministry was carrying out the investigation through the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM), he said after opening the Rasah Umno Division delegates meeting here.

Ismail Sabri asked Bank Negara to investigate the matter under the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2001.

He also asked the Home Ministry and the Registrar of Societies to determine the status of Suaram.  — Bernama
