Ministry to seek A-G’s advice on Bersih 2.0 ruling

July 24, 2012

PUTRAJAYA, July 24 — The Home Ministry is to seek the advice of the Attorney-General (A-G) on whether it should appeal a High Court decision today quashing an order of the minister declaring Bersih 2.0 an unlawful society.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein (picture) said in a statement that the ministry would scrutinise the grounds of the judgement.

“I respect the decision of the court which quashed the Home Minister’s order of July 1 last year which declared Bersih 2.0 an unlawful society,” he said.

Judge Datuk Rohana Yusof, in her decision, allowed the petition by 14 members of the Bersih 2.0 steering committee, including Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan, to quash the minister’s order on the basis that Bersih 2.0 comprised a coalition of registered organisations.

In her 30-page judgement, Rohana ruled that the decision to declare Bersih 2.0 unlawful was made without taking into account several facts — both relevant and irrevelant. — Bernama
