July 01, 2012

KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 — Former Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan has been appointed as chairman of Petronas, effective today.

In a statement, Petronas said Mohd Sidek, who recently retired from the Malaysian civil service as the 12th Chief Secretary to the Government, would head, guide and provide stewardship to the Petronas board.

The statement said Mohd Sidek's appointment was approved by the company's board of directors at its sitting on June 27.

"Given his vast experience and expertise, the board believes that Petronas will be extremely well served by having as its chairman a person of Tan Sri Mohd Sideks's capacity and standing.

"Tan Sri Mohd Sidek's appointment will restore clear demarcation of roles between the chairman and president and CEO, and as such, is a further reflection of Petronas' commitment to upholding global standards of good governance, a key pillar of its Corporate Enhancement Programme (CEP)," the statement said.

The impending appointment was made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at a dinner honouring Mohd Sidek, last Friday.

Meanwhile, vice-president of the Human Resource Management (HRM) Division, Juniwati Rahman Hussin has been appointed as vice-president and venture director of the Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC) to lead all proposed Petronas developments in Pengerang, Johor.

A chemist by qualification and former Petronas scholar, Juniwati has served Petronas for 30 years, holding various responsibilities in refinery operations, project management, corporate planning, marketing and trading, as well as in education.

She will be succeeded in her current position in the HRM Division by Raiha Azni Abd Rahman, senior general manager of the HRM Division, Exploration and Production Business.

Over her 28-year career with Petronas, Raiha Azni, also a former Petronas scholar, has served in numerous positions across a range of HRM functions within the group.

Both appointments are effective today. —  Bernama
