Najib to launch Quran recital contest in Johor

Najib will kick off the event on Monday. — File picJOHOR BARU, June 1 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is scheduled to open the 54th national-level Quran Recital Competition at the Persada International Convention Centre here on Monday.

Twenty-seven participants from all the states except Kelantan will participate in the men’s and women’s categories in the five-day event, themed “Understanding the Basis of Unity of the Ummah”.

Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (Jakim) director Datuk Othman Mustapa said the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, would close the competition and give away the prizes on June 8.

The champion in each category will receive RM15,000, a pilgrimage package, souvenirs and certificates and get to represent the country at the international-level competition to be held next month. — Bernama
