PKR Youth distances itself from pre-Merdeka flag incident

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 3 — PKR Youth (AMK) today denied that it masterminded the incident in which a small group of individuals brought a pre-independence flag and flew it in place of the national flag at gathering held on the eve of the national day celebration here on Thursday.

The movement’s head, Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin (picture), alleged it had been a suggestion by AMK deputy information chief Mohd Najwan Halimi for the national day celebration.

“He has been giving his views on the flag since 2007 in his blog. At that time he was just an ordinary AMK member and did not hold any high post.

“But at the top-level of AMK itself, we never discussed the changing of flag issue. I feel the issue has purposely been played up as the flag known as ‘Sang Saka [Malaya]’ has been in existence even before independence,” he said when contacted by Bernama here today.

Newspapers reported today that Mohd Najwan had admitted he was the flag designer and brought it to the assembly.

The action of the assembly participants in raising the flag allegedly to replace the Malaysian flag has been heavily condemned by various parties. — Bernama
