PLUS designates certain emergency lanes for use to avoid Aidilfitri congestion

September 04, 2010

SUBANG JAYA, Sept 4 – Motorists using the North-South Expressway to return to their kampungs to celebrate Aidilfitri will be allowed to use designated emergency lanes to ease traffic congestion.

PLUS Expressways Berhad chief operating officer Nik Airina Nik Jaffar said the emergency lanes were where acute traffic congestion often happened during the Aidilfitri period.

“However it is reminded that not all emergency lanes can be used. The designated emergency lanes will also be supervised by policemen,” she told a media conference here today.

Nik Airina said from September 9 until 11, the designated emergency lanes were from Nilai to Seremban, Tapah to Gopeng and Behrang to Sungkai while on September 12, 16 and 19, road users can use emergency lanes when travelling heading from Simpang Pulai to Gopeng, Gunung Tempurung to Tapah and Bidor to Bikam (all in Perak), and from Port Dickson to Seremban.

More information can be obtained by calling PLUS’ hotline at 1800-88-0000.

Meanwhile, Road Transport Department director-general Datuk Sollah Mat Hassan said on September 8 and 9, heavy vehicles would not be allowed to use the PLUS expressway, north as well as south bound.

“As for September 18 and 19, heavy vehicles are again prohibited from using the highway when heading towards Kuala Lumpur to ease traffic congestion,” he said.

Sollah said RTD also would not carry out any roadblocks along the NSE during this period but offenders would be stopped about a kilometre away by enforcement personnel who will be in disguise. – Bernama
