Police foil 2 suicide attempts by father of national athlete
BUKIT MERTAJAM, June 10 — Police today foiled two attempted suicides by the father of a national athlete, including one at the Penang Bridge.
The 59-year-old man is said to have tried to take his own life near the Queensbay shopping mall in Bayan Lepas early today but was foiled by police who coaxed him out of it.
Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) police chief ACP Azman Abd Lah said police were notified of a man crying by the sea near the mall at about 4am.
“A patrol team was sent there and coaxed him to return home. Our men took about three hours to coax him to return home,” he said when contacted by Bernama.
The patrol car then proceeded to tail the man who was driving his own car, he said.
“Upon reaching Km2 of the Penang Bridge at about 7.45am, the man stopped the car by the bridge, alighted and tried to jump into the sea,” he said.
However, he added, police swung into action and managed to intercept him.
Azman said the man was brought to the SPT police headquarters to have his statement recorded.
“Based on preliminary information, he allegedly has some family problems,” he said. — Bernama
