January 11, 2013

IPOH, Jan 11 – A Toyota Fortuner Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) belonging to the Sri Manjung Road Transport Department (RTD) was overturned and damaged by members of the public, who claimed it’s driver caused a nine-vehicle pile up at the Pekan Air Tawar traffic lights, near Sekolah Menengah Methodist, here today.

Manjung deputy police chief DSP Ahmad Mat Isa said the SUV with three Sri Manjung RTD staff had stopped at the said traffic lights when it was hit from the back by two lorries, two school buses, four cars and one motorbike.

“About 30 bystanders set upon the officers, claiming the massive accident had been caused by them,” he said when contacted today.

“Fearing for their safety, the officers ran off leaving their vehicle there and hitched a ride to lodge a report at the Sri Manjung police station,” he said.

Fifteen people, who have yet to be identified, were injured in the mishap and sent to the district hospital for treatment, he said.

The case is being investigated under the Penal Code and Road Transport Act. – Bernama
