KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 — Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim today warned of stern action against those who produce videos which contain racial slurs.
He said such action should be taken to prevent the matter from becoming a habit among the people in the country.
Their act of doing so could be categorised as a violation under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, he told reporters after watching a full dress rehearsal of the Merdeka Day celebration at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil, here.
“We should not regard this (production of such videos) as something ordinary. This is something most saddening. After all these years of independence, we should be more matured by now.
“What is the joy for us, for example, in belittling the national anthem or defacing the portrait of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong or producing a video which tarnishes our dignity as one nation under the 1 Malaysia concept?” he said.
He was asked what action was to be taken against Wee Meng Cheng, better known as Namewee, who had produced another of his controversial videos, this time about a teacher alleged to have made seditious remarks.
Dr Rais said the ministry would assist in viewing the video to enable the Attorney-General’s Chambers to determine which law to apply for the prosecution. — Bernama
