BANGI, June 27 — The government is handing out RM9.9 million in bonuses to 10,675 secondary school educators who exceeded targets set last year under the Education Ministry’s ‘New Deal’ put in place under the Government Transformation Programme (GTP).

Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (picture) said in a ceremony for the 125 principals who exceeded their targets that the initiative has narrowed the quality gap between urban and rural schools as 67, or 54 per cent, of the 124 high schools that scored above 90 per cent in their annual assessments were rural.

“The 124 schools, or 5.51 per cent, exceeds the target (of four to five per cent),” said the deputy prime minister, who is also education minister.

Some of the principals present today received over RM80,000 for their achievements, while the top five per cent of teachers who exceeded their targets will receive an average sum of just under RM20,000.

A total of 92, or 4.09 per cent of, secondary schools also excelled in 2010, which surpasses the New Deal’s target of between three and four per cent.
