KOTA BARU, Nov 27 — Recipients of the RM200 book vouchers paid out under Budget 2012 may start redeeming these at the start of 2012, Bernama Online reported the Higher Education Ministry as saying today.

The ministry’s secretary-general, Datuk Abd Rahim Mohd Noor, said the mechanism for redeeming the vouchers will be revealed at a later date.

The vouchers, which will benefit some 1.2 million upper secondary and tertiary students, were among the handouts promised by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak when tabling Budget 2012.

Other forms of assistance pledged include a one-off RM500 to all households with a monthly income of below RM3,000, and schooling assistance of RM100 for all primary and secondary students from Year 1 to Form 5.

The payouts encountered controversy earlier when Pakatan Rakyat cried foul over their disbursement prior to the approval of the Budget.

PR lawmakers then said the government’s move to issue the schooling assistance for all primary and secondary students earlier this month breached Dewan Rakyat’s Standing Orders.
