BALIK PULAU, Jan 27 — The realisation and willingness of individuals, organisations and associations to help the needy will prevent society from degenerating due to individualistic attitude, said Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

The wife of the prime minister said the spirit of helping one another was also in line with the nation’s desire of building a caring and loving society.

“It’s important to understand this because no matter how developed a country is, helpfulness, generosity and kindness must be fostered for the creation of a prosperous society,” she said at the giving-out of about RM393,000 in aid to 35 Penang non-governmental organisations (NGOs), here, today.

Rosmah is the president of Bakti or the Welfare Body of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers.

She said the effort to help the needy including the disabled, senior citizens and orphans would be complete if the programmes or activities were seriously and effectively carried out.

Rosmah said in helping the needy, in line with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s call for “People First”, Bakti had contributed about RM5 million each year to help this group in society.

She said a large portion of the money was for welfare, disaster relief, education and the Semai Bakti Programme, besides Bakti’s own internal programmes for its members.

“We are relieved to see the smiling faces of the less fortunate and needy when they receive aid,” she added.

Rosmah also urged the Penang NGOs to always go to the ground to listen to the people’s problems themselves. — Bernama
