KUCHING, April 18 — Eight old faces from Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud’s previous administration have been retained in the new state Cabinet, but the Sarawak chief minister has yet to pick a replacement for the deputy chief minister post.

SUPP chief Tan Sri Dr George Chan, who was Abdul Taib’s deputy, had lost his chance after being defeated by the DAP in Piasau in the weekend’s state polls.

The eight sworn in at the new State Assembly Complex here earlier this afternoon are: Tan Sri Alfred Jabu, Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Datuk Seri Michael Manyin, Datuk Seri Dr James Masing, Datuk Seri William Mawan, Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh and Datin Fatimah Abdullah.

They took their oaths in front of Sarawak Governor Tun Abang Muhammad Salahuddin Abang Barieng, witnessed by Abdul Taib.

Abdul Taib, who will turn 75 in May, was himself sworn in for his seventh term as CM immediately after the Election Commission officially announced the results at 10.40pm on Saturday.

Dr Chan — whose daughter is married to one of his former boss’s son — has announced he is quitting politics entirely following his embarrassing defeat on Saturday at the hands of a newcomer and will be meeting his party to hand over power tomorrow.

“I am quitting active politics… It is time to go. Enough of politics. What I hope for is that SUPP will be in good hands and that the party will continue to play a role in serving the people in Sarawak,” he was cited as saying by English daily, The Star.
