KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 18 – Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said today DAP will be unable to stop PAS from establishing an Islamic state should Pakatan Rakyat (PR) come into power as “PAS is the taiko (big brother).”

The MCA president pointed to how PAS held the mentri besar post in Perak after Election 2008 despite DAP having the lion’s share of state assemblymen.

“Perak DAP had 18 seats. PKR and PAS together had 13. The taiko should be DAP but PAS became the taiko,” he said in today’s debate with his rival Lim Guan Eng.

“DAP has no way of stopping PAS. PAS will create an Islamic state. Kelantan and Kedah show us clearly that DAP is actually a slave to PAS,” the former health minister added, referring to the two state governments currently led by PAS.

But Lim dismissed the accusation as “Barisan Nasional’s (BN) dirty tactics” as “Umno tells Malays, PAS is used by DAP instead.”

“We are not anti-Malay. Only anti-corrupt BN. PAS, PKR and DAP, nobody is using anybody. We are only ready to be used by the public,” the DAP secretary general said to the 800-strong audience of largely MCA supporters.

Dr Chua has repeatedly accused DAP of trying to create a “two-race” system with Chinese supporting the opposition PR and Malays backing BN and called on Chinese not to allow this to happen as it will also lead to PAS forcing Islamic laws on non-Muslims.

However, Lim, who is Penang chief minister, accused MCA of not being brave enough to stand up to Umno, the Malay party that has held the reins of power since independence.

But Dr Chua responded saying “you ask if we dare to fight Umno? Does DAP dare to fight PAS?”

The debate, themed “Chinese at a Crossroads. Is the 2 Party System Becoming a 2 Race System?” was also screened on Astro in both Mandarin and with Malay translation.
