July 02, 2012

NIBONG TEBAL, July 2 — A soldier was among eight suspects detained by police in connection with a number of robberies in Penang, Selangor and Johor.

Penang acting police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Jaafar said they were detained during a special operation last week after four of them had robbed three Bangladeshi men in Taman Jawi Ria here on June 26.

“Following a tip off, a police mobile unit in Sungai Bakap launched ‘Ops Kesan’ and trailed a Honda Jazz that was heading north with four men in the car,” he told reporters at the Seberang Perai Selatan police headquarters here today.

He added that with the help of a patrol unit from Sungai Bakap and another team from Bukit Tengah, the Honda Jazz car was intercepted in a village in Juru.

“They (suspects) tried to escape into the jungle but we managed to detain one suspect at the spot and two others in the village, including the soldier from the Sungai Petani camp in Kedah,” he said.

Investigations showed that the Honda Jazz reported stolen in Klang on April 28.

In a follow-up operation on the same day, five more members of the gang comprising two men and three women were detained at a hotel in Taiping. — Bernama
